Data Storage Converter

Convert GB, TB, PB and TiB so you can compare cloud storage, drives and server space without guessing.

Shows both decimal and binary-style reference units where useful.

Short answer: 1 TB is 1,000 GB and 1 PB is 1,000 TB. 1 TiB (a tebibyte) is slightly bigger, exactly 1,099.51 GB.

Decimal versus binary

Drive makers use decimal units. Many operating systems count in binary and still write “GB” or “TB” when they really mean GiB or TiB. That is why a 1 TB drive shows up as roughly 931 in the file manager. The calculator shows both so you can compare like with like.

Where it helps

  • Comparing cloud storage plans (2 TB versus 5 TB)
  • Planning a NAS or server purchase
  • Checking how much of a drive you will really get

Example

A 4 TB drive is 4,000 GB in decimal. In binary units that is about 3.64 TiB, which is why your system may say 3.6 TB free on a fresh disk.
