Video Call Data Calculator

Estimate how much data your meetings use each month, for one person or a whole team, in standard, HD or group video.

Enter weekly call time.

Short answer: a standard-quality video call uses roughly 0.45 GB an hour, HD about 1.2 GB, and busy group calls about 2.5 GB. Multiply by your weekly hours and 4.345 to get a monthly figure.

What affects call data?

Camera quality, the number of faces on screen, screen sharing and whether your camera is on at all. Audio alone uses a tiny amount: around 30 to 60 MB an hour.

Example

Five hours of HD calls a week: 1.2 × 5 × 4.345 = about 26 GB a month. A team of five doing the same adds up to 130 GB. If everyone turns their camera off for half the time, the total falls to about 65 GB.

How to keep calls smooth and cheap

  • Turn the camera off when you are just listening.
  • Switch from HD to standard when you are on mobile data.
  • Close tabs and cloud sync before an important call.
  • Use a cable or sit near the router.

Calls also depend on ping and packet loss, not only speed. Test those with the Ping and Latency Tool.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions about the Video Call Data Calculator

How much data does a Zoom call use?

About 0.5 GB an hour for standard video and around 1.2 GB for HD. Group calls with many faces can reach 2.5 GB an hour.

Do audio-only calls use much data?

Hardly any. Roughly 30 to 60 MB an hour.

How much upload speed do video calls need?

Around 3 Mbps per person for HD, and a bit more if you share your screen.

Why does my call freeze even on fast internet?

Usually packet loss, jitter or weak Wi-Fi. Speed is rarely the problem.
