Streaming Data Calculator
See how much data your streaming habit eats each month, by quality, hours, days and number of screens.
Short answer: SD video uses about 0.7 GB an hour, HD about 3 GB and 4K around 7 GB. Multiply by your viewing hours and number of screens to see the monthly total.
How the calculator works
It multiplies the GB per hour for your chosen quality by hours per day, days per week, screens and 4.345 (the average number of weeks in a month). The result is a monthly total, plus a daily average and an estimate of how long a 1 TB allowance would last at that pace.
Example
Two hours of HD, five days a week, on one screen: 3 × 2 × 5 × 4.345 = about 130 GB a month. Upgrade to 4K and it jumps to roughly 304 GB. Add a second screen in a different room and it doubles.
Different services, different numbers
Streaming apps adjust quality to your connection, so the figures are averages, not promises. Some services use less data at the same resolution thanks to better compression. If your service lets you pick a data-saver mode, you can often halve the numbers without a big visible difference on a phone.
Speed versus data
Do not mix them up. Data is how much you use over time (GB). Speed is how fast it arrives (Mbps). HD needs about 5 Mbps of speed and uses about 3 GB per hour of data. Check the first with the Internet Speed Requirement Calculator.
Frequently asked questions about the Streaming Data Calculator
How much data does Netflix use per hour?
Roughly 0.7 GB for standard definition, 3 GB for HD and 7 GB for 4K. The exact figure depends on the show and your settings.
How can I stream with less data?
Choose a lower quality or a data-saver setting in the app. On a phone screen, SD or medium HD looks fine for most shows.
Does streaming music use much data?
Very little compared with video: roughly 40 to 150 MB an hour depending on quality.
Do two screens use double the data?
Yes. Each stream is separate, so two screens in HD use about 6 GB an hour together.
