Bits & Bytes Converter

Switch between Mbps, MB/s, Kbps and KB/s in one go, and finally see why bits and bytes confuse everybody.

8 bits make 1 byte. Lowercase b means bits; uppercase B means bytes.

Short answer: 8 bits make 1 byte. Lowercase b is bits, uppercase B is bytes. To go from Mbps to MB/s, divide by 8, and to go back, multiply by 8.

Why does it matter?

Because the two labels sit side by side everywhere. Your internet plan says 200 Mbps and your download shows 25 MB/s, and it looks like you are being short-changed by a factor of eight. You are not, it is the same speed written in two units.

Quick table

MbpsMB/sKbpsKB/s
818,0001,000
801080,00010,000
800100800,000100,000

Remember it this way

  • Networks and plans: bits (Mbps)
  • Files and storage: bytes (MB, GB)
  • Downloads in a window: bytes per second (MB/s)

For more focused converters, try Mbps to MB/s or Kbps to Mbps.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions about the Bits & Bytes Converter

How many bits are in a byte?

Eight.

What is the difference between Mb and MB?

Mb is megabit and MB is megabyte. One MB is eight Mb.

Why do providers use bits?

It is the networking tradition, and it also makes speeds look eight times bigger than the matching byte value.

Is KB/s the same as Kbps?

No. KB/s is kilobytes per second and Kbps is kilobits per second. KB/s is 8 times bigger.
