Divide by 1,000 for the decimal units used by most providers.
Kbps to Mbps Converter
Convert kilobits per second to megabits per second as you type. Handy for old plans, audio bitrates and mobile data speeds.
Short answer: divide Kbps by 1,000 to get Mbps. 2,000 Kbps is 2 Mbps.
Where do you still see Kbps?
Older broadband plans, audio and video bitrates, mobile data in poor coverage and some IoT devices still quote speeds in kilobits. Streaming music at 320 Kbps, for example, is just 0.32 Mbps, tiny compared with a modern connection.
The formula
Mbps = Kbps ÷ 1,000. So 512 Kbps is 0.512 Mbps and 8,000 Kbps is 8 Mbps.
Useful comparisons
- Music streaming: 128 to 320 Kbps
- Standard video call per person: around 1,000 to 3,000 Kbps
- HD video: around 5,000 Kbps (5 Mbps)

Frequently asked questions about the Kbps to Mbps Converter
How many Mbps is 1000 Kbps?
1,000 Kbps is exactly 1 Mbps.
Is Kbps faster or slower than Mbps?
Kbps is slower. A megabit is a thousand kilobits, so 1 Mbps is 1,000 times bigger than 1 Kbps.
Is it 1,000 or 1,024 for network speed?
Network speeds use 1,000. The 1,024 habit belongs to some file-size systems.
What does 256 Kbps get me?
256 Kbps is 0.256 Mbps. It is enough for plain text and some audio, but video will buffer constantly.
