Upload Speed Calculator
Know how long an upload took? Turn the file size and time into your real upload speed and see how it compares with your plan.
Short answer: upload speed is the file size in megabytes times 8, divided by the seconds the upload took. Plug your numbers in above and you get Mbps and MB/s in a click.
Why upload speed deserves attention
Most of us only look at download numbers, but upload is what you use when you join a video call, send a big attachment, back up photos or go live. Many home plans have far lower upload than download, so it is often the real bottleneck for people who work from home.
The formula
Mbps = MB × 8 ÷ seconds. A 200 MB video that takes 60 seconds to upload is 200 × 8 ÷ 60, about 26.7 Mbps or 3.3 MB/s.
How much upload do you need?
- HD video calls: about 3 Mbps each way per person.
- Cloud backup running in the background: 5 to 10 Mbps keeps it moving without hurting calls.
- Streaming or content creation at 1080p: 6 to 10 Mbps, more for 4K.
Common reasons uploads are slow
Cloud services sometimes throttle uploads on purpose, Wi-Fi is usually weaker at sending than receiving, and a backup running quietly on another device can take most of your upload without you noticing. Pause other uploads and test again before you draw conclusions.

Frequently asked questions about the Upload Speed Calculator
What is a good upload speed?
5 to 10 Mbps is fine for calls and everyday cloud use. If you upload large videos or work with big files daily, 20 Mbps or more saves a lot of waiting.
Why is my upload so much slower than my download?
Most home plans, especially cable and DSL, are built that way on purpose because people download far more than they upload. Fibre plans are often symmetrical, meaning both are the same.
Does upload speed affect video calls?
Yes. Your camera and microphone are sent out over your upload connection. If it is too low, other people see a blurry or frozen picture even if your own screen looks fine.
How do I get an accurate upload test?
Close other apps, pause cloud sync and use a file of at least 100 MB. Test on a cable if you can.
