MB/s to Mbps Converter

Turn a download speed in MB/s into the Mbps number you see on your internet plan. Multiply by 8, done for you.

→
100.00 Mbps

Multiply by 8 to compare a file transfer display with an internet plan.

Short answer: multiply MB/s by 8 to get Mbps. A download running at 10 MB/s is using 80 Mbps of your connection.

When is this useful?

You are downloading a game and your client shows 15 MB/s. Your plan says 150 Mbps. Are you getting what you pay for? Convert 15 MB/s to Mbps and you get 120, which is 80% of the plan and pretty good for a real-world download.

The formula

Mbps = MB/s × 8. The other way round, MB/s = Mbps ÷ 8.

Quick examples

  • 5 MB/s is 40 Mbps
  • 12.5 MB/s is 100 Mbps
  • 50 MB/s is 400 Mbps

Keep in mind

Your download client, the server on the other side and your Wi-Fi all affect what you see. Treat the converted number as a snapshot, then try the Download Speed Calculator with a big file for a more reliable average.
